Our dude Rickey recently came back from Korea. We caught up for a bit yesterday and he’s been telling me about his push for this year. He’s ready and focused…. Rickey’s on a mission.
He’s been telling me about this boyhood from Korea. Some people have called him the Asian Sartorialis. Rickey was out hanging with him and he posted him on his blog..(pic from yourboyhood’s blog)

A few months ago we got a call from the Miss America producers asking us to take part in their last episode, which was going to be the red carpet episode. They wanted to revamp the Miss America image and make it a little more relevant to today’s television market. They asked us if we would like to outfit 9 of the states. They said they wanted to choose 6 leading designers from L.A. (We’ve been flattered before and it usually doesn’t work with us…) Our first reaction was… humm have you seen our clothes? They confirmed and said yeah we’ve already checked your website and they thought it would be a really great fit… Soo, I was like oh.. o.k.. (Pause..) I kinda told her what we were about, and gave a brief description of our customer and they were totally cool with it.. They wanted to revamp the Miss America show with different looks other than the old ball gown image.
I might have come off like a snob.. trying not to work with them.. only because were not the Miss America type of clothing brand.
After thinking about it.. we thought at the end of the day we thought it would fun.. A few days later we headed up to the film site and the whole experience was really cool. Everyone was soo nice to us… Catering to us our every need. They put us with the underdog team.. Soo funny.. We’ll I am really glad one of our girls made it to the top three. Gwan New Mexico, Go underdogs….
Question: Would we do it again? Yessir..
All girls rock’n cassette.

1) Building on the left used to be an old wheat mill. The mill once used the water flowing through the canal to power grinder. Built in 1776 (Old as the U.S.).
Travel a little further east past Bromley by Bow and construction is underway for Olympic games.
1) Historic building. Paul’s neighbor they share the island together. 2) Apparently the oldest laid brick in the whole of England. Notice the perpendicular laid bricks for the carriage wheels.

My last night in town; had a late meeting with a really nice director cat Giles and his assistant Kate over at the Shoreditch house. We met just a few hours before he leaves to South America for a month to shoot a new commercial. The Shoreditch house is a members only multi floor estate, that happens to have a pool on top floor(yes in London).. The building is equipped with a huge bar, pool table and video games that’s loaded up with credits, a dining area with views of an open kitchen and a back dining area for more private conversations, and a wonderful view of London.
1) Met up with Fats the man around town.. He gave me a cool insiders look into the different stores in London. 2) Stopped by the maharishi store and got a chance to meet Hardy the man behind maharishi, P.T. gave the intro.. (mode 2 painting..)
Been staying the night over at Paul and Angela’s over in the east end.. Paul had Monday off so he was able to really show me around the city.. On Tuesday spent most of the day working in the Puma office.
1) Paul’s desk in the Puma design studio. 2) Puma’s entertainment office. Thanks Lisa.
1) Walked down the famed Savile Row, and walked by some of the old famed tailor studios. Sadly it wasn’t all that I had thought it was gonna be. One major reason for the let down was right at the start of Savile row was the biggest Abercrombie I had ever seen. They turned a once beautiful building into a retail day club.. (beefed up topless guys selling you clothes.) Paul noticed that even with the door closed and the streets empty you could still smell the Abercrombie cologne from the side walk.. (That shit was funny.)
1) Westminster, one of the illest underground stops, you can just smell the money…
My first night stay was on Old Street in the Eastend.. What seams like L.E.S. of nyc.. Eastend is a little more diverse. You can find the NewRave kids, Rudeboys and Coolguys, all hanging around the way from each other.. A side note you know your in a good place if they have Kabab/Fish ‘n chip’s shops on every corner, for the after drink soak up..

This weekend in London was gorgeous. Was out all day and night. Check out amazing sunset on the river Thames.
1) Millennium Bridge 2) St. Paul’s Church
Enjoyed a stroll around the Sunday market and around Bricklane, in London’s Eastend. Bricklane on Sunday is wild, you’ll find loads of vintage shops and people hawk’n anything and everything they can.. Apparently this stems from an old ‘by law’ that states you can sell stolen goods between certain hours on Sunday. Ever since.. people just bring all kinds of shit on Sunday and lay’n it out for sale..
1) Actually found that cassette sticker that we posted a while ago. 2) Ill record shop, soo many goodies could cause a person to spend all their money..
1) Rude boys at mendoza’s. 2) Ska ska ska…1
1) These guys were kill’n it and by the looks of it they might have been still hung over from last night. Haller. Voice’s was raspy, and the tunes were funky.
Arrived in London this morning. And shortly after I checked into the hotel long time buddy Paul Taylor came to pick me up to show me around. Haven’t been back here in a while. We walked around the East end. Headed over to Tower bridge and then walked over to the Tate Modern.

This weekend was cool, aside from last min Capsule show preparations… BlondeRedHead played to a sold out crowd at Terminal 5 in nyc, a great way to wrap up their world tour.. Simone from BlondeRedHead arranged a vip table for us. After the show they had an after party at Bacaro near China town… It was a nice way to start off the week in nyc. Super Sweet. Peep the pics.
Just got back to LA and spent two nights at home. And now in nyc for the Capsule Exhibition.

Homie in Japan hit spotted cassette in Cover Mag’s February issue.
Had a long layover in Narita airport, and like most people I dread long layovers.. Chilling at the airport made me really miss Japan. I haven’t been to Japan in a couple of years, and it crossed my mind to head down to Toyko for a quick lunch before my flight, but then told myself I must be crazy… So I got to kick it for a couple of hours in Narita’s immaculate airport. The ANA lounge was really nice, they had complementary undon and soba bar, and this high tech automatic Kirin beer dispenser which made the time fly by… Japan is such an ill place. It’s a place where you can drop a deuce and you don’t even have to wipe your ass.. They have toilets to do that for you..

Been in China for a minute. Although Hong Kong is considered a part of China now. It’s good to be back in Hong Kong.
My dude Andy Lee turned me on to the Hong Kong & Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture.
They counldn’t have picked a better place to hold the Hong Kong & Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture. It is being held at an old Central Booking Police Station Compound, right in the middle of “Central”. CBPS connects to the Victoria Jail which is also hosting exhibitions of the Biennale. Being able to walk through what looked liked 6×4 jail cells, and Central Booking rooms was pretty cool. There was an overall constraint vs freedom aspect to the show.. While looking at plans for new mega buildings, and ideas on how to network cities together you couldn’t help but be reminded of the total opposite constraint that people felt when the jail was occupied.
Model of the Beijing Olympic Stadium.
Our dudes in Japan saw this article about cassette in Cover Magazine Japan.
I think it says something like cassette being an indie fashion brand out of Los Angeles catering to the creative fashion community.
Man, China is on the come up. The Peoples Republic of China is so ill. This place is the wild wild west but in the east. Cash rules everything around here. There’s a fine line of anything goes, but just don’t get caught doing something stupid. A country of contrast. Overnight billionaires to people still living off of rocksoup in the same town as the billionaires, and everyones getting their hustle on.
On the way to port town of Shun De (Shun Duh) P.R.C. for our tour of factory visits through southern China.
1) Hong Kong in the background. 2) Went through the port of Hong Kong which was a maze of huge boats ready to ship some dolla bills.
A thing with tea pots, they say you’re not supposed to wash it completely in order to save some of the oils for better tasting tea. Many dedicated tea drinkers have a different tea pot for the different teas they drink.
1)Factory workers tea cups. 2) Old jar as a tea cup. That brown stuff… tea resin.
1) After hand making the different parts of the sweater, sometimes they use use this contraption to link the pieces together. This part is called linking. 2) Our dudes know how to run a clean operation. Sample room.
Linked up with some of our LA homies Dennis, Rob, Emil, from Crooks and Hong Kong locals from the States Li-Ting and Arron.
Lee-Ting and Aaron’s rooftop view.
Cool’n out, having a drink..
1)Li-Ting was kind enough to share some “hard to find sold out everywhere in Japan” chocolate goods. 2) We headed down to Land of Kwai Fun, and posted up at Lei-Dou for a few more drinks before calling it a night. Hong Kong is really the nyc of Asia.
Met up with Andy for a couple of Guinness a recently reopend Lei Dou.
Andy’s friend was having a birthday party at Racks.. It’s was open bar and this guy(left) picked up the tab for his girl. Good look’n out my dude… While I was there people were handing out coffee Patron shots.. It might sound gross but took me by supprise. It’s a winner. After Racks we headed to Volar then finished the night at Sugar (right)
Headed back to the hotel with a cabbie practicing to be a race car driver.. (I wish they all drove like him…)
Happy New Year. Dawn patrol from Hong Kong.
Another 3am banger.. Shout out to all the people who came thru and brought their dancing shoes for the dance off’s.. That was great!!
Special shout out to Dark Alley, Nate Day, Blu Jemz (Happy Birthday!), NoMsg, urthworm, roamzilla and to Pase Rock for jumping on the tables and having fun with us. Good times.

Got my Burton gear in the mail, team rider edition Custom (in black) with ics (infinite channel rail system), c60 bindings, pants, board bag, gloves, socks. Boots are on their way.. Ready to ride..
Stopped by Rickey’s place yesterday to say Merry Christmas and to see him befor he left for Korea. Old chap is gonna be gone for three weeks. We got a chance to catch up and did a little philosophysing. Before I left he said E. Haze wanted him to give me a numbered print for Christmas.. Now I am not sure if that was that was true or Rickey was being nice on the behalf of Haze. In any case.. Thank you E. Haze.. and Thank you Rickey loc. I was lucky enough to get the number of Love, out of 250.
The box was specially made for the prints.
Super duper think achival paper..
The cassette crew and friends roll up to mammoth for our own 3day weekend. We all had a blast. Rode all day and played a little texas hold’em at night.. It was a perfect end of the year getaway to say thanks for everyones long hours and hard work in the office.
Up on the hill there were no lines at all…. unstrap and roll up to the front of the lift…
1,2) Coming up to the middle of the mountain.
The town was empty.. The streets were clear at night and there were no lines during the day….

Just landed back in LA this morning. Headed into the office for a few hours as soon as I landed.. Then had to break out home to get some rest after the long journey home.. My rest only to be short lived so we could head out to watch Bjork’s last performance in the states for a few years (peep the encore youtube). She played at the brand new Nokia center in Downtown LA. Bjorks performance really turned up and eclectic crowd, a real good cross section of people.. Seen some old faces waiting in the concessions line. Ratatat opened up and Bjork killed it.
Encore performance..
Three new paintings to coincide with three of his newest toys.

1)Head shakin, DJ booth climbing Kid Millionaire, 2) Dj Darrel, resident DJ of the two most exclusive members only clubs in town.
Terence, a dear old friend of mine invited me over to have a drink and to check out his new flat while I was Hong Kong. He’s living in the penthouse on the 50th floor of a newly developed estate. Homie has his own private deck above his flat, perfect for year around bbq’s. Check out his amazing view.
Andy and Kathleen invited me to dinner. I had thought we were going to just meet up at their flat and then go somewhere near by…I had no idea that Kathleen was going to prepare a wonderful home cooked meal. Very nice of you guys. It is so nice to have a home cooked meal while your away from home. Cheers.
Their place has a huge patio, with a couple of sun chairs, deck for hanging out and a west coast style bbq pretty rare for being smack in the middle of downtown Hong Kong . Pics of the view from the patio. Shortly after dinner we battled on the wii for a quick bit, before heading out into town.
The weather this time of year in Hong Kong is really great. You can actually wear a jacket.
Pretty much as soon as I got into town I headed to a ‘Variety’ charity event (not trying to sound all posh) to meet up with a couple of buddies, Kathleen and Andy. The charity event was to raise money to help kids in Hong Kong that have trouble getting around the city because of a disability. Hong Kong is not an easy place to get around if you have a sprained ankle let alone a life long disability. The turn out was great and I heard they surpassed their target goal. The event was held on the roof top in Lan Kwai Fung.
It seems that there’s alot of things on in the city now. Terry Richardson and a Michael Lau exhibition. The Kid Millionaire Steve Aoki is going to spin this Friday (in a town filled with Kid Millionaires.).. It’s always cool when theres extra curricular actives happening around town.
Later after we closed down the bar at the charity event we headed over to Racks.
L.A.’s emerging punk scene from 1978 now showing at Bergamot Station at Track 16.
Photographs by Ann Summa.

Quoted from the poster.

Los Angeles: Photographs by Ann Summa
Ann Summa was returning from five years in Sierra Leone, Africa, and Tokyo, Japan when she landed in the mist of L.A.’s newly-born punk scene in 1978. She immediately recognized that she had stumbled onto something extraordinary and began documenting the people around her. Summa captured some of the best known bands to emerge from L.A. while they were still in their infancy-X and Black Flag, among others-and bands who went on to achieve legendary status despite the brevity of their existence, including The Germs and The Screamers. Also on view are images of The Bags, The Allycats, The Cramps, and The Suburban Lawns. Summa captured the many out-of-towners who passed through L.A.’s first generation punk community: The Bush Tetras and Lydia Lunch from New York; U.K. punk royalty Joe Strummer and John Lydon; and, two of punks unofficial godfathers, Iggy Pop and William Burroughs.
The photos were taken between the years of 1978 and 1984. Curated by Kristine McKenna.

It was a blast at the Cassette LunchBox event. The place was packed. It reached capacity early on with a great mix of people. There was your mix of hiphop heads, street kids, models chicks, to indie folk all having a good time. The energy was great. People started dancing on top of the booths cuz the dance floor was so crowded… We rocked it till nearly 3am. I am still getting hit up on how much fun people had.
Thanks to all the people that came through.. Thanks to KennyMac, Rickey Loc, Gomez and the Lunch Box crew for inviting Cassette to get down with you guys. Thanks to 10 Cane for the open bar.. A special thanks to all the guest DJ’s who took time out to come spin-WendyCity, Chuck from the Cool Kids, Urthworm, and NoMSG.

It’s pretty cool sitting next to Prada and Gucci.. However who does Prada and Gucci represent? An old guy who wears a big silver belt buckle?
Not me. Black it up cassette style..
Big up Eugene and the crew at Details.
The guys at Refinery29.com are Defineding and Refinding Indie style. We got turned onto these guys a while back. The site is refreshingly focused, with lots of cool content thats not mainstream. A really great New Yorker’s look into whats cool out there. We recently got a chance to tallk about what influenced me as a kid growing up. (click on the picture to read the full piece)

Blonde Redhead
Blonde Redhead had an outstanding performance to a full house at the Wiltern Theater last Thursday. They were nothing short of fantastic. They mixed it up by playing some old favorites aswell as songs from their new album 23. Simone’s drum-bass was clean, clear and body moving. Kazu’s voice was out of this world. Amedeo was rock’n out doing some analog sound trick manipulations. After their performance the crowd would not leave. The crowd just stood there cheering and clapping for what seamed to be a five minute ovation. This happen twice. Blonde Redhead played a double encore performance!
Autolux opened up the evening.
Our buddy Jojo from ny sent this pic. She spotted our high waist in this months Gisele mag.

Anytime I get a chance to see a new Cirque du Soleil show I def. try to go.. I like some shows better than others but I am always inspired by how creative the costumes are and at what the human body can do. We went to see Coreto a Cirque du Soleil show thats passing through Los Angeles. Definitely check it out if you can. (Click for more info on Corteo.)
We all went down to the Barry McGee aka Twist show at the RedCat gallery in downtown(Los Angeles). Twist is one ill cat. Big up, Margaret Kilgallen (R.I.P.) who also had a solo show there a couple of years back. Both shows equally as powerful. We’re huge fans of both Twist and Margaret’s work, have been for many years… Check out the flicks below I took of the Twist show at the Hammer circa late nineties/early2000’s.

Summers coming to an end and our mind has already been on this years snow season. Can’t wait.
While at project, I met up with Erika an old friend that now works for The North Face (Supreme X NF jacket,- that was her). We got a chance to catch up and talk shop at our bespoke event…
I remember long ago when a North Face jacket was the jacket to have.. She was telling me about how the summit series from North Face is just as good as any of the other top extreme weather clothing company. Erika was nice enough to send me a few jackets to test out and give her feed back on.. All the jackets I got were fully taped and one of them was stitchless (assembled by sonically welding or glue taping the seams). You know me Erika..
I have designed a number of snowboard collections as well as making my own three layer Gore-Tex membrane fabric in my years past. After inspecting these jackets, I was impressed by the fabric choice, the construction and the fit of these jackets. They are seriously top notch.
Erika said if I liked this stuff that it’s only gonna get better for ’08.
One of the jacket has a Recco avalanche rescue system built in.
The Recco detector is a non-powered device, that will never loose signal strength and needs no batteries to function.
It requires no maintenance and has a virtually unlimited lifespan.
Just in case you get caught in an avalanche while riding in the back country..
This is the stitchless jacket…
Check out the interior of the jacket looks absolutely beautiful. Those black panels are made of nice stretchy fabric..
1) Placed perfectly over the shoulder blades 2) They placed the stretchy fabric right over where the elbow bends.
The Rose Bowl, flea Market was this weekend.. And our buddy Joanne was in town from nyc to “shop LA” and “walk” the Rose Bowl.
It’s almost comical how many familiar faces you’ll see walk’n the rose bowl. – Joanne saw some old friends from nyc, that was in town to speak at the Getty.. As well as some old co-workers from nyc. Elise from cassette was also in the mix walking around with Ben and Ben’s mom (nicest lady).
So, while we were walking around I was telling Joanne about the legendary kettle pop corn.. It’s the bomb.. They are all huge and perfectly pop’d kernels, that is sooo sweet (glazed sugar) with a little bit of salt. Yummm. We walked around the rose bowl looking for it.. and when we found it.. We made sure our it was worth the journey..
Question :: How long does it take to walk around the actual rose bowl?
Answer :: A half a bag of pop corn..
The skate, surf trade show mecca, ASR was this weekend. Jae and I drove down for a evening in down town San Diego. We heard our old buddy Styles was spinning with Just Blaze at the DC :: Ten Deep :: New Era party.
Our girl WendyCity was also down for ASR. We rolled out with WendyCity, Dom from Brooklyn Projects and Arnold from GreyOne to another cool spot down the street.
The front bar had some taxidermy and animal wall paper, with performing bands in the back.
WendyCity knew the line up around town, so after a bit she was like… “Flosstradamus and Stretch Armstrong are spinning around the corner.. “
We like them both.. So we were off to the next spot..
1, 2) Flosstradamus on stage.
1) WendyCity and Strech 2)Flosstradamus wearing cassette in a URB photo shoot.
It was getting late and the crowd was getting thin.. We then headed back to the Ten Deep :: DC :: New Era Jump Off party. It was the only event in town going on till 4a.m.
When we got there it was still just as fun as when we left but with everyone having more drinks…. Good times.

While at the show I got to meet up with some of the nice guys over at Stone Island. While we were talking, Alex from DNR stopped by the stone island booth and wanted to take pictures of their bags and such.. I kindly got out of the way so they could handle their quick photo session. Later that day Alex came by our booth and kindly dropped off the latest issue of DNR. It was pretty cool to see our white denim shorts featured in one of their shots.
Thank you Alex, the shot came out great.

Our buddy Josh K. was at the airport in route to Las Vegas for the Magic/Project show.. He said he was talking to a honey and she asked what he did.. He said I rep cassette… And she said, ohh, wait, you might want to look at this.. and handed him the new OK weekly.

There is something about journals that lends it self to honesty. A personal journal is often a place where one jots down new ideas/techniques, notes to self, sketches, words, or cut out pictures/collages.. In the new issue of Theme magazine John and Jiae reveal a private look into the journals of some of todays well known designers, artists, and musicians. Did I mention Money Mark has a section in this issue?.
